The prosecutors and the judges all raised their heads at once and looked at one another. Secchi’s lawyer involuntarily clapped his hand to his mouth. All the jurors had heard it. An eerie silence fell on the hall.

“You called it medicine,” the president said slowly.

Secchi’s response was quick and nervous. “I have been calling it poison, but up until recently it was also medicine.”

Two days—thirteen hours—of thoughtful, effective testimony had been wiped out with a few careless syllables. Probably Secchi would have paid anything to buy the word back, the expensive word that, once having fallen out of his mouth, might cost him years of his unassuming life. Secchi was sent back to sit in the defendants’ cage, restless and miserable, while four of his letters and his long deposition were read by a clerk, inaudibly, so that the audience had time to muse on the possible code words for “poison.”

The questioning ended with the only topic that could now hold the court’s attention, the postcard written by Linda Murri: “I don’t hear anything more about S.Did the medicine work?”

He was the person referred to as “S.” And he was the person who gave “the medicine” to Tullio. Wasn’t all that true? And who else was aware of the plan with “the medicine”?
